Danny & Karen

West Maui, Hawaiʻi

Danny and Karen came from Texas for an intimate elopement on Maui’s west side.

There was something about that day that stayed with me. It wasn’t a complicated production, and there wasn’t a long shot list or a carefully choreographed sequence. What I remember most is how naturally everything unfolded.

A look. A pause. The way they moved together. The light shifting across the coast. Small gestures that would have been easy to miss if I had been too focused on forcing a picture instead of paying attention to what was already happening.

That experience shaped the way I still like to photograph weddings today. I observe first. I let people settle into the moment. I step in when a little direction helps, but I try not to interrupt the energy of the day just to create an image.

For me, the strongest photographs usually happen somewhere between the expected moments. They are not always the obvious ones. Sometimes they are quiet, sometimes imperfect, sometimes fleeting, but they are often the photographs that carry the most feeling years later.

That instinct has remained at the center of my work ever since.
